Cashmere is indulgent, but commonly comes from factory farms where quality of life is not all it could or should be for animals or their human caretakers. In contrast, our alpaca comes from sustainable, small-scale Andean farms. The silky fibers are twice as warm as wool, three times stronger, and all kinds of softer. Plus, since alpacas lack lanolin, it's much less allergenic than typical wool.

Nancy
Knitter
Arequipa, Peru

Indulgent Alpaca - the fair trade cashmere of the Andes.

It takes but a glance to know how special these items are. The delicate textures and vibrant patterns are as much art as apparel, hand-knit by skilled Peruvian artisans. Nancy, who began knitting in a Mothers' Circle in 1985, translates the drawing of designer Mary Ann Weerts into stitch patterns - bringing the delicate details to life. Nancy now employs several women in her community to hand-knit these complex and beautiful sweaters. "My dream," she says, "is to employ more knitters, so more mothers can help their families as I've helped mine."
