Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. By eliminating such chemicals, we can decrease pollution in the air and in water supplies. We are also able to create better working conditions for workers who handle the cotton, limit residual chemicals that can irritate the consumer's skin, and decrease the amount of chemicals added to landfills at the end of the product's life cycle.
Hidden among Montevideo, Uruguay's stunning Spanish Colonial architecture, we were pleased to find a real fair trade gem in the family-owned factory where workers have crafted beautiful sweaters for over 30 years. Workers here earn a fair wage plus a month's paid vacation, loan assistance, even five month's paid maternity leave. The high retention rate speaks volumes: one-third of employees have worked here for a decade or more. The father and son team who run the business recently won an innovation award and $10,000 grant from the Uruguay government. As anyone who knows them could guess, Gregorio and Andres split the money with the employees of the factory.
