Amidst the breathtaking changes taking place in China's industrial breadbasket, lower-skill workers are unfortunately absorbing the brunt of the downside of industrialization. To compete with emerging lower cost countries, Chinese workers face enormous pressures to work harder for hardly life-sustaining wages. This factory is an one of those "needle in a haystack" exceptions we were lucky enough to be referred to by our social auditor. The pay is outstanding, the facility is fully air-conditioned, meals are free, and there's an on-site gym and doctor. The factory even pays for workers' train tickets to enjoy the Chinese New Year with their extended families. It's no wonder the turnover rate here is a fraction of what's typical in apparel factories.
